How Does Medicare Advantage Work?

Medicare Advantage, sometimes referred to as Medicare Part C, is a Medicare-approved private alternative to Original Medicare. It includes Medicare Parts A and B and usually a Part D prescription card. They have become increasingly popular because they feature a more holistic approach to medical care and may include extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing aids, gym membership, and free over-the-counter items to help keep you healthy.

What Types of Medicare Advantage Plans Are Available?

Just like with standard health insurance, there are quite a few different Medicare Advantage Plans to choose from. Depending on your personal needs, your team will be able to direct you toward the best fit to ensure you have the coverage that makes sense for you. These plans include:

  • Health Maintenance Organization Plans (HMO)
  • HMO Point-of-Service Plans (HMO-POS)
  • Medical Savings Accounts (MSA)
  • Preferred Provider Organization Plans (PPO)
  • Private Fee-for-Service Plans (PFFS)
  • Special Needs Plans (SNP)

A

Medicare Part A

When you first enroll in Medicare, you will automatically be registered for part A. This part covers any hospital stays, hospice care, nursing homes and other facilities. While most people do not have to pay a premium, you will still be charged a deductible which is why some people add supplemental insurance to cover any out-of-pocket costs.

B

Medicare Part B

Medicare Part B covers outpatient services, ambulances, medical equipment, screenings and doctor's visits. Part B can be more costly, and some people do not sign up for it if they have coverage through a job or spouse. For this reason, we will discuss your options to make sure you have proper coverage at the right price.

C

Medicare Part C

Medicare Part C is also called Medicare Advantage. Medicare Part C covers everything Part A & B do, and it may even cover some extra benefits. Some of these extra benefits can be dental, vision, hearing and health classes.

D

Medicare Part D

Part D focuses on prescription drugs. It will help you cover some of the cost of medicine. Even in this plan, there are different options and qualifications, which is why you should talk to an expert at Harrigan Insurance Services.
